San Antonio, Texas Plant Shut Down in Listeria Outbreak

The Texas Department of State Health Services has closed down a San Antonio food processing plant at the center of a Listeria outbreak. 

Texas health officials have indicated that 10 people in Bexar County, Travis County and Hidalgo County, Texas have contracted listeriosis.  Texas health officials have linked six of the ten Listeria illnesses to chopped celery produced by Sangar Produce & Processing, which may have been contaminated Listeria monocytogenes.  Five of the victims have since died due to complications from their Listeria infections.

Texas Health Officials Find Sanitation Problems at Plant Linked to Listeria Outbreak

Texas Department of State Health Services inspected the San Antonio facility and found several sanitation issues, including a condensation leak in the food production area, soil on a preparation table and improper hand-washing by employees.

According to published reports, Sangar’s products were distributed Dallas, Houston, Rio Grande Valley and Oklahoma.  The products were sold to restaurants, a hospital and elementary schools

Listeria Symptoms
