Salmonella Concern Leads to Pine Nut Recall

The CDC and FDA are reporting a multi-state Salmonellosis outbreak possibly related to contaminated pine nuts.  According to the press releases issued, 42 individuals have contracted Salmonella enteritidis in five northeastern states. This outbreak has been linked to Turkish pine nuts. These contaminated pine nuts were sold by Wegmans grocery stores. The pine nuts could have been purchased in bulk bins from July 1, 2011 through October 18, 2011.

The foodborne illness lawyers at Neblett, Beard & Arsenault are investigating possible legal action on behalf of victims in this Salmonellosis outbreak. Where Have the Salmonella Illnesses Been Reported?

Illnesses have been reported in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Of the 42 reported illnesses, 27 Salmonella enteritidis outbreak strain illnesses were reported in New York alone. Two individuals have required hospital treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of Salmonella?

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning often include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. Symptoms are normally experienced within 3 days of ingesting Salmonella contaminated foods. The Salmonella bacteria can enter a victim’s bloodstream necessitating treatment with antibiotics. Cases of Reiter’s Syndrome, also known as reactive arthritis have been linked to post-Salmonellosis cases, especially in the elderly, the young and those with compromised immune systems.
