Hepatitis A
What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a communicable disease caused by Hepatitis A virus, one of five hepatitis viruses. Hepatitis A accounts for about 38% of all cases of hepatitis in the United States. Hepatitis A virus is usually transmitted from person to person through fecal contamination. In some cases, hepatitis may be foodborne and waterborne.
What are the symptoms of Hepatitis A?
- Sudden fever
- Malaise
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice
How long does Hepatitis A last?
Hepatitis A is usually mild and only lasts one to two weeks but occasionally, the symptoms can be severe and full recovery may take several months, with patients feeling extremely tired and overall ill during that period.
Who is most at risk for Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is more common in adults than children. Persons who eat food contaminated by infected persons are vulnerable to acquiring hepatitis A if they don’t have immunity to the virus. Hepatitis A outbreaks are common in institutions, crowding housing conditions, the military and prisons.
What are the complications associated with Hepatitis A?
Most cases of hepatitis A are not life threatening and pose no serious long term complications. Some cases of hepatitis A will recur months after the victim recovers from the illness. Less than one percent of the reported cases of Hepatitis A in the U.S. result in death. Most of the rare deaths that do result from Hepatitis A are among the elderly or those with liver disease.
