Half a Billion Eggs Recalled, 2000 Sickened with Salmonella
Public health officials have announced multiple Salmonella recalls that now include over 550 million eggs possibly contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis. Between May 1 and July 31st 2010, nearly 2000 Salmonella illnesses were reported nationwide; a number the CDC says is likely to grow.
10 States Report Salmonella Cases
Investigations into the reported illnesses have been conducted by public health officials in 10 states, and have identified 26 restaurants or events where more than one person was made ill with the outbreak strain of Salmonella enteritidis. Data from these investigations suggest that shell eggs are a likely source of infections. Preliminary information indicates that Wright County Egg, in Galt, Iowa, was an egg supplier in 15 of these 26 restaurants or events.

Multiple Recalls Cover Half a Billion Eggs Possibly Tainted with Salmonella
On August 13th 2010, Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa announced a nationwide recall of shell eggs due to fears of contamination with Salmonella enteritidis. That recall was expanded on August 18th to include over 380 million eggs. COUNTRY Eggs, Inc. and Luberski, Inc. announced salmonella recalls of additional shell eggs that were produced by Wright Egg Company and packaged under their brand names. On August 20th, Hilliandale Farms of Iowa issued an additional salmonella recall of shell eggs. Nearly 10 million more shell eggs were recalled by Jackson, Mississippi’s Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the nation's largest egg seller and distributor. Cal-Maine stated that 24,000 dozen of these recalled eggs, repackaged at an Arkansas facility, included the following Wagon Trail Large 5 dz. Only (UPC Code -8-13905-00074-3; P1382-150), West Creek Large Loose 15 and 30 dz. (P1382-150), Generic Large Loose 15 dozen (P1382 and Julian dates 152, 153, 155, 160, 161, 164,) and 30 dozen eggs (P1382 and Julian dates 152,160, 167, 175) and Sam’s Bulk Pack 15 dozen eggs (UPC Code - 0 28621-99398-3; P1382 and Julian dates 151,152,158,159,160, 164, 168) Cal-Maine received eggs from Hillandale Farms of Iowa. This does not increase the original amount recalled by Cal-Maine. The number of eggs recalled for Salmonella contamination totals over a half a billion shell eggs.
The recalled eggs were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Utah and Wisconsin. These companies may have distributed Salmonella enteritidis tainted eggs nationwide.
Recalled eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Albertsons, Boomsma, Cardenas Market (plastic overwrapped 60-egg cases), Dutch Farms, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Hillandale, Lucerne, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Lund, Kemps, Pacific Coast, Shoreland, Sunshine, Sunny Farms, Sunny Meadow, Trafficanda and Trafficanda Egg Ranch brand names. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, 20 count overwrap, 30-egg cartons, 5 dozen egg cases). Loose eggs and eggs intended for institutional use and repackaging are sold in 15 and 30 dozen tray packs and CRF 20 and 30 egg overwrap units sold under the brand names COUNTRY EGGS, Inc., Wholesome Farms, West Creek, Alta Dena Dairy, Driftwood Dairy, Hidden Villa Ranch, and Challenge Dairy. On the recalled egg packaging, Julian dates range from 099 to 230 and plant numbers are listed as 1026, 1413, 1720, 1942, 1946, 1860 and 1663. However, individual eggs may have been re-packaged by customers. Additionally, eggs marketed under the brand names Albertsons (large one dozen and 18 count), Farmer’s Gems (large one dozen), Mountain Dairy (large one dozen), and Yucaipa (large one dozen) as well as large loose food service packages have been recalled by Moark, LLC who obtaines shell eggs produced by Hillandale. The plant number for these recalled eggs is 1156 with Julian date 187.
Symptoms of Salmonella enteritidis
Victims of Salmonella enteritidis may begin to experience symptoms within 12 to 72 hours of consuming the foodborne pathogen. Once infected with salmonellosis, victims may experience severe symptoms including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The illness may last between 4 to 7 days. Many victims will recover with little to no medical treatment; however, some victims may suffer serious complications from the food poisoning which may result in hospitalization or death. Severe Salmonellosis complications include arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis and dehydration. Children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk for suffering these severe complications.
