Death from Foodborne Illness Complications

According to the CDC, about 5000 people die each year from foodborne illness. While everyone is susceptible to developing foodborne illness complications from food poisoning, it is usually the most vulnerable who are killed from foodborne illness. Children under five, the elderly, infants, those with preexisting conditions and individuals with compromised immune systems all are significantly more likely to have their foodborne illness turn tragic.

Salmonella, Listeria, Toxoplasma, E. coli and Campylobacter account for the majority of deaths from known foodborne illness pathogens, but the majority of deaths from foodborne illness are never attributed to a known source. Medical advances have given victims of foodborne poisoning a much greater chance of surviving and recovering from a potentially deadly illness. 50 years ago, botulism was difficult to identify and was fatal in a majority of cases, but today fatalities are rare thanks to advancements in identification and treatment. But even with today’s best medical technology, thousands will still lose their battle with foodborne illness.
