Enterohemorrhagic Colitis
What is Enterohemorrhagic Colitis?
Enterohemorrhagic colitis is a serious illness which affects the large intestine and can be caused by an infection from harmful bacteria such as Shigella and Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) such as E. coli 0157:H7.
What are the symptoms of Enterohemorrhagic Colitis?
Symptoms of enterohemorrhagic colitis generally onset about 3 to 4 days after the Shigella or STEC pathogens are ingested. Symptoms of acute enterohemorrhagic colitis include:
- Abdominal cramping / pain
- Low grade fever
- Bloody diarrhea
- Mild nausea / vomiting
How long does Enterohemorrhagic Colitis last?
Enterohemorrhagic colitis caused by STEC and Shigella typically lasts about a week. But for some individuals, enterohemorrhagic colitis is only the beginning of their illness as infection with STEC and Shigella can cause severe and life threatening complications.
Who is most at risk for Enterohemorrhagic Colitis?
Everyone who ingests Shigella or STEC is at risk of developing enterohemorrhagic colitis. Some groups are at a higher risk of infection with Shigella and STEC thus they are at higher risk of developing enterohemorrhagic colitis. Those in the high risk groups include:
- Young children, especially those under the age of four
- The elderly
- Individuals with compromised immune systems
What are the complications associated with Enterohemorrhagic Colitis?
- Hospitalization due to severe symptoms
- Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
- Organ failure
- Death
